Wapakoneta Recycles!

WAPAKONETA'S VOLUNTARY CURBSIDE RECYCLING PROGRAM:

Wapakoneta recycled at the rate of 22% in 2012, saving residents $148,560.49. The curbside pickup program is not mandatory, but this document is intended to help residents who would like to participate to start recycling or to become better recyclers.

    glass bottles and jars -clear, green and brown
    aluminum cans
    steel (tin) cans
    #1 plastic containers, ie; soda pop and water bottles
    #2 plastic containers, ie; milk and detergent bottles

Look for the recycling symbol with the number pressed in the plastic material.

Rinse all food containers.
Remove caps and lids from glass and plastic and dispose as garbage.
Leave lids attached to food cans.

    newspapers
    magazines
    phone books
    catalogs
    office paper
    other mixed paper
    flattened paperboard, ie; cereal, cracker, tissue boxes, paper towel and toilet paper rolls, other clean food boxes.

Corrugated cardboard boxes have fluting that you can see at the edges.  Flatten and leave them next to the bin.

Be sure to place your recycling bin, paper bags and corrugated cardboard at curbside with your garbage bag the night before your assigned garbage pickup day.  There are no "re-runs."  Garbage and recycling pickups begin as early as 6am.

Note: if your pickup falls on a city holiday, your garbage will be delayed until the next workday. Your recycling will be delayed until your next scheduled pickup day.

    liquid latex paint is now collected at Auglaize County's Monthly Collection in St Marys.  See below.

HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE COLLECTION AND PRICING

Auglaize County Solid Waste collects and disposes of the Household Hazardous Waste in the county.  No commerical buisinesses, only residents may participate.

Household Batteries

Non-Freon Appliances (25.00 charge for Freon Appliances)

Paint: 1.00 charge per container up to 1 gallon.  Each additional gallon is an additional 1.00.

Chemicals, Herbicides, Cleaners, Pesticides: 1.00 charge per pound for these materials.

Lightbulbs: (Up to 8 feet) 2.00 charge

Televisions: 5.00 charge

Tires: All tires must be off the rim.  Passenger and light truck tires 3.00 charge.  Large Truck and Agricultural Tires 5.00 charge. Semi-truck Tires (3 rib or 4 rib) 8.00 charge. Tractor Tires (Lug Type) 22.00 charge.

All materials must be taken to the Saint Marys Recycling Center for disposal:

Collection occurs the 2nd Wednsday of each month from 8:30 to 12:00 noon the months of May through October.

No checks of Money Orders - no bills larger than a 20.00.

DROP AND SWAP:
Drop and Swap is Wapakoneta's attempt to further reduce the amount of material going to the landfill.  It is an annual event usually scheduled in May at the Public Works facility at 110 E Harrison St from 9am until 1pm.

bicycleExchange reusable household goods with other residents:
    furniture
    bicycles
    lawn and garden equipment
    tools, and other functional items
    all computer components and cell phones
ALSO:
    shoes, must be tied together in pairs, No rubber boots and no heels over two inches.
    batteries
    junk metal: aluminum, brass, bronze, copper, iron, lead, steel (remove webbing from lawn chairs)
    non-freon appliances: stoves, washers, and dryers.
    appliances with freon: refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, de-humidifiers. 15.00 charge for freon disposal.  Cash only.
    all tires, off rims only.  No commercial dealers.

You need not DROP to SWAP and you can DROP even if you don’t SWAP.

Free SHOPPING DAY the following Sunday from noon - 2pm.  Come and take home any item left from the DROP AND SWAP.

We cannot accept used carpeting and any unsalvageable, non-functioning equipment.
WE DO NOT ACCEPT NON-WORKING TV’S.
WE DO NOT ACCEPT MATTRESSES AND BOX SPRINGS.

COMMUNITY COMPOSTING:

The City Farm, located at 16043 Wapakoneta Cridersville Road (click for map), is a compost facility for the disposal and composting of yard waste only.

Hours at the facility are Monday through Friday 9 am to 5 pm in season. Saturday 8 am to 2 in season. April through November.   Lunch Hour is 11:45 - 12:15 Monday through Friday.

compostPayment for the disposal of yard waste requires the pre-payment of a "yard card" which is available at the City Hall utilities office. 419-738-3011

The rates for disposal of brush, tree limbs, grindings, grass clippings, leaves, yard/garden waste and other acceptable materials are as follows:

  • Automobiles or van load (Blazer, Bronco, Suburban, for example) 3.00
  • Pick-up truck or "small" 2-wheel trailer 6.00
  • Dump truck or large trailer 15.00

Minimum fee of 3.00 allows the equivalent of two 30 gallon garbage bags, regardless of the type of vehicle used to haul it.

The rates for composted material which can be purchased at the City Farm:

  • One scoop from a 2 yard bucket 27.00
  • Garbage Can 3.00
  • Four 5-gallon buckets (minumum charge) 3.00

The City Farm is a compost facility for the disposal and composting of yard waste only. No paper, plastic or trash is to be deposited with yard waste materials. We cannot accept stumps or building materials.

Many Wapakoneta residents do backyard composting of kitchen and yard waste.  Their gardens are benefiting from the fresh compost, rain barrel water harvesting and other practices of  backyard sustainability.  Many interesting resources on this subject can be found online.

The City of Wapakoneta encourages its residents to learn to be master recyclers.  The more you recycle, the fewer garbage bags you will consume.
